Bull Kelp came into existence when songwriters Taylor Ashton and Zoe Guigueno had six weeks to kill in Winnipeg in the fall of 2011. The duo had been playing together for two years as part of the five-piece band, Fish & Bird, but had so many back-logged songs that they decided to teach them to each other on their time off from touring.
With a guitar, a banjo and an upright bass, Taylor and Zoe weave dense lyrics in harmony through unconventional chord changes, while their melodies catch the listeners' ears like any solid folk song.
Bull Kelp is currently based in Toronto where they have been playing weekly gigs in preparation for their debut album, to be recorded in Montreal in April 2012.
Another amazing piece of information. Fish & Bird opened for Spirit of the West at the Sold Out Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on St. Paddy's day this year. Serious solid musicians here. I can't stop talking about them and this will be a sold out show so book a table, come in for some dinner. Tickets are already moving! Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
